Amsterdam Art Adventures

Well, I'm at the end of my frantic updates. This entry marks the last to be graded during my current study abroad experience. I intend to keep writing, but at a more leisurely pace, posting more items that are not just relevant to my interests, but that might be beneficial for others during their travels as well.

I'll end the theme of mythology and folk tales with my own story: on Valentine's Day in Amsterdam, I got a tattoo!

Earth heart tattoo on my forearm (note Newfoundland)! "And your freckles are all of the other planets" - Monica

The artist, Monica, was phenomenal. She had the most amazing bedside manor (especially considering I was a nervous wreck with sweaty palms and a low pain threshold) and never once made me feel out of place. In all honesty, if I were to (read: when I do) get another tattoo, I would (will) seriously consider flying back to the Netherlands to have it done.

Sitting for an hour and a half while trying to ignore the billions of tiny scratches searing my skin, we had a lovely (albeit strained on my behalf) chat about her profession. Considering the huge influx of tourists that Amsterdam sees year-round, I was interested to know whether they made up a significant portion of her clientele. As it happens, they make up about half, and during my appointment the only other clients I saw were all from North America.

It was clear that Monica took huge pride in her work and in her parlour, House of Tattoos. She said the artists there strive to create work that is original and tells a story, each with his or her own unique art style.

Afscheid, Amsterdam! Taken from the plane on the way back to Strasbourg.

I am infinitely grateful for Monica's contribution to my story. This weekend is one I won't forget.
